Ruffles

Turtlenecks are getting a major update come fall—in Victorian form. Think ruffles, romantic lace, and floral prints that add a little extra flair to your fall top collection. Marc Jacobs and Brock Collection went big with the trend, opting for full ruffled collars adorning floral tea dresses. Tory Burch and Adam Lippes, meanwhile, opted for a more subdued take on the look with ladylike blouses that could effortlessly be worn with a pair of blue jeans.

Feathers

At a time when more and more luxury brands are going fur-free, it seems fashion is turning to feathers. Colourful, glamorous, and over-the-top feathered pieces took the Fall 2019 runways by storm. There were colourful feather statement coats at Prabal Gurung and Cushnie, while Oscar de la Renta, Michael Kors, and Marc Jacobs turned the piece into an evening essential. For those who want to be extra on a daily basis, Dion Lee sent a more subtle take on the trend down the runway on a delicate white turtleneck.

Patchwork

Designers gave ’70s patchwork a modernized update for the 2019 woman. Kors and De La Renta turned to statement outerwear for the nostalgic look, while Eckhaus Latta reimagined colourful patch swatches in matching sweater sets.

Waist Belts

It’s all about the waist come fall. The return of waist belts took various forms on the runways—from belted suits and coats to contrasting belts worn over several layers at Prabal Gurung. Polished? Yes, but the idea is more about breaking up a cold weather look in a way that accentuates the waist.

Fleece Makes a Comeback

There were plenty of outerwear options to choose from, but the most attainable of them all? An updated take on the fleece jacket. Veronica Beard took the look into leopard print territory, while Phillip Lim offered up a short-sleeve iteration. Coach did the trend in fall’s rich colour palette of eggplant and navy.

Ultraviolet

Jewel-tone colours reigned supreme, but one, in particular, stood out amongst the pack: purple. From shades of lavender to deep eggplant hues, the colour purple was a source of inspiration for a long list of designers. Done in a sweater, suit, and dress form, the hue makes for a fresh contender to spice up your mostly black fall wardrobe.

Leather

It’s time to upgrade your go-to leather jacket for a full-on leather ensemble. Think of it as the modern-day Matrix, head-to-toe leather won big on the New York runways. Zimmermann delivered an oxblood leather dress—complete with a matching beret—for a sexy spy look. Phillip Lim and Cushnie stuck to all-black ensembles that were cinched at the waist. But Sies Marjan really took the fabric to new territory with colourful leather suits done in rich blues and purples.
