Alexander Wang Debuts his Collection 2 for Spring 2019 – The collection picked up where his June show left off. That one was an examination of his Chinese-American roots and his status as an immigrant. It mashed up chinoiserie with Axl Rose bandanas and punk safety pins. This one, Wang said, was a “celebration of the American Hustle.

There were Matrix-inspired leather skirts fused with sort-of-Chanel tweeds for a fresh take on uptown meets downtown style. There were nods to ’80s power suiting and a series of casual sporty looks bringing the “work hard, play hard” mentality lives on the runway.
Wang, who has always been a master of party girl style, continued his foray into the working girl world with more matured looks for the woman who hustles well beyond her 9-to-5. While doing so, he managed to stay true to the brand’s DNA—bringing a touch of downtown cool to every look, even ladylike tweed cardigans and jackets.
Moreover, there were two eye-catching coats with spray-painted happy faces, a slew of sleek headbands and a number of oversized sporty shirts with splashes of violet or emerald green. Great as these tops were, they peculiarly had the word “PA!N” on them—and would have been better off without it. He also could have done without three black-and-white column dresses that looked too similar to the designs he presented when he was at Balenciaga. Yeah, they were nice enough, but in a collection filled with spectacular pieces, nice enough just seems out of place.

As always, the show delivered a front row filled with members of the Wang gang, including 21 Savage, Teyana Taylor and Paloma Elsesser.
